Pixxxel
This series from Jean-Yves Lemoigne is funny. I love the idea of pixels-as-objects, for a start. But to make it “sexy” and place the “women”/pixilated objects in 2D glamour/porn shoot environments is very cool. Great concept. It could almost be leggo, an effect that’s created by the absolute cut-off between the environment and the pixilated women. Lemoigne started out in the ad business before becoming a photographer.

Wonderful! The rest of his portfolio is equally humorous.
Do you know if these were created with 3D assets or just manipulated to look that way?

No idea, I haven’t seen anything larger than this. It could easily be painted plywood models! But it could equally be real women photographed in-situ and then retouched in layers. Maybe the 2D image from the original image was imported into Maya and used as the source for 3D models. Then once it was rendered with the shadows on the pixel blocks, it was dropped back in to the original background…

reminds me of Duke Nukem

That’s kind of what I was guessing. The deformed pillows and shadows certainly give the impression that there were physical models in the photographs, but the self-shadowing of the pixels makes me think that they must have been rendered in a 3D package. If it were paint on plywood I think it’d be even cooler!
