Ack. Nauseating! The line between advertising and editorial is barely visible anymore. This strikes all sorts of unethical nerves. Don’t you think?

It’s interesting that they are appropriating the word “documentary” to describe advertising. GQ in the UK gets clients to pay double, to remove the word “advertorial” from paid content. Complex magazine in the US is just all out paid content, often modeled closely on ad campaigns. It’s about the way things are done really, I think. Playstation and EA, amongst others, paid for “Alter Ego”, but they never tried to edit anything or direct me in any way at all. There’s a big difference between being a patron and being associated with something, and producing ad material on the cheap and filling editorial slots with it, or describing it as something which it isn’t. Check out the one after this one though- the “anthropological documentary” porn.

It would be interesting to know what the people really thought about the burgers. I doubt many would ‘ve said anything bad about them directly to the crew but talking to their friends after. High salt and fat content can only take food so far…
It would be good to do the reverse, seal fat vs. whale blubber… I’d sign up for that just to try them.

Maybe get the Icelanders to import something. I went there once during their nasty food festival (can’t remember what it’s really called). They can’t grow anything there and during a time in their history when they couldn’t get any imports, they had to make do with whatever they could get hold of. Every year they celebrate by remembering the shit that they had to eat. I was offered a plate that included seal hand (literally a grey cold hand) and shark soaked in ammonia. They told me that the shark was soaked in piss but I don’t know if they were winding me up. That would be great. Do an official icelandic visit to the Burger King headquarters, with diplomats and all…

I love these ads – I think they are great, funny and cleverly pushing the boundary of advertising in a good way. Isn’t that what we want all art to do? why it is that people in the editorial world get afraid of this? what they should be doing is creating better content/art. Because at the end of the day thats the bottom line. This video made me laugh, it seemed honest I mean the last line of the spot says it all the guy likes seal meat better then a whopper-classic.
(full disclosure, I worked for the ad agency that conceived of this spot for four years and I know several of the people in the spot)

Dude, it’s a taste test, done with people in exotic places. But I agree with you in a way- the delivery is funny. It’s well made. But my comment was more about the way in which commercial content has to spread into every other type of content, because of the way the industry, and in particular the delivery of content, is changing. That is across the board. The way that content is paid for can very easily change the nature of it. In fact in alot of cases, it very clearly is. That isn’t due to the paucity of good alternative content, it’s due to the demands of the people who are paying for it. This is an ad, applying the word “documentary” to it, just because it features people in exotic costumes, is inappropriate. Like I said, its just about how things are done. I’m definitely not against good commercial content.

all I’m saying is that this is clearly an ad for burger kind and it just seems like they are making their ad a documentary on what they did. it seems like a fairly honest look in a way. Documentaries are now allowed to have opinions and openly craft an argument and as long as at the end of the day the message is honest I don’t have a problem with it.

There’s a funny blog on freedomhaters.org on the Whopper Virgins commercial.
It ties it into Noam Chomsky and how the indigenous people on the commercials will most likely be forced to move to big cities when the fast food chains move in, and have to work for Burger King for a tenth of what American’s make.
