I’ve been doing a bit of trawling on case modding- where people, usually hard-core gamers, modify their computers to make them look like something else. I guess if they’re very heavily invested in the computer, then personalising it in this way makes total sense. What made me think of it was Jerald Block’s comment in yesterday’s post- “it redefines relationships to include virtual items and objects, like the computer itself.”
On the other hand it could purely be a design issue, that relates entirely to what drab objects they often are, and the desire to make them fit aesthetically. Looking at the last image here, though, I’d imagine there’s a bit of both.
